Do you have a great heart? Do you want to really make a difference?
We are looking for a long term foster or adoptive home for Mariska. Mariska is beautiful, with the most startling green eyes. She is sweet and goofy and likes to play, trotting after you like a puppy if you have a toy that she wants. Mariska likes petting, and while she hasn’t been a lap cat so far at the shelter, she wants to be near her people. She can usually be found hanging out on a shelf or cabinet so that she can be part of everything, keeping company with us. Mariska is more interested in people than other cats, but has generally been fine sharing space with the other cats at the shelter.
Mariska was clearly someone’s cat once. She was apparently abandoned outside. Pregnant. As young and tiny as she is, she was a great mom to her 5 kittens (now all adopted). But when they were weaned, Mariska was ready for a home of her own.
Sounds pretty perfect, right? So why do we need someone with a great heart?
Because it turns out that Mariska’s heart is not that great. Mariska has severe aortic valvular stenosis- a rare diagnosis in cats. It means that the aortic valve which controls the blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body is very narrow. Before she got to Protectors of Animals her heart had already been damaged from the narrow valve. The damage is irreversible and the medication she is on will help, but not totally prevent, future damage. Her life span is unknown, but it will not be a normal life span. It may be weeks, months or years. We simply don’t know.
What we do know is that Mariska currently feels great! She runs and plays, and makes us laugh. She doesn’t know that she is sick. Mariska is on a daily medication that she takes easily in a pill pocket. Other than that, she has a pretty normal life in the shelter.
In the shelter....
We don’t want Mariska to spend her life, however long she may have, in the shelter. We want her to curl up on a bed, not a file cabinet. We want her to have a person or family that she can call her own. We want her to have a home. So we are looking for someone with a great heart. Someone who wants to make a real difference to a little cat who caught some bad breaks.
If you think that might be you, please fill out the application at www.poainc.org and send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more about Mariska, her condition and our long term foster program. If it cannot be you right now, please consider sharing Mariska so that her person can find her. We believe that somewhere out there is someone who needs to make a difference to Mariska as much as Mariska needs them. We just need your help to find them.
Adoptions are now done by appointment only. Email email@example.com for more info and an appointment.
