We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats. You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters. Odysseus is FIV+, but this does not mean that he can't live a normal, happy life. Ask us for more information about FIV.
Some cats are full of contradictions. Take two-year-old Odysseus. In photos, Odysseus either looks impossibly pretty or incredibly goofy. (We think it’s the tiny fangs.) He can run hot and cold. When you walk up to Odysseus, he will often tend to back away, but soon as you pet him, he will be rolling around madly, purring and showing you his tummy. When he arrived at Protectors of Animals, Odysseus also hissed constantly and seemed aggressive. Come to find out, he’s actually very timid and gentle. (He just really hates being picked up.)
A lot of this may be explained by how he came to us. Odysseus was surrendered when his person was evicted and became homeless. He has lost everything and everyone he has ever known. He’s trying to find his sea legs in a situation he does not understand. So being nervous when someone new approaches, being terrified when a stranger picks him up and moves him and hissing to show that he does not like these changes all make perfect sense.
And as he feels safer, Odysseus shows us who he truly is: a cat who likes people and petting, and who sometimes needs to be reassured. A good boy who tries to act tougher than he is when he is scared. Someone who isn’t always their best self when everything is changing. Perhaps you can relate. Especially if you are one of those people (like this writer) who often looks pretty goofy in photographs.
To find out more or to make an appointment to meet the available cats, please start by filling out the application on our website. Our placement tea m will be in touch via email to answer all of your questions and walk you through our process. And if you aren’t in a place to adopt a cat like Odysseus today, you can still give him a hand… erm paw… by spreading the word about him.
