Purry Mason spent well over a year living in or near the parking lot of a law office. Hence, the name he arrived with. Frankly we don't think he is much of a lawyer. His written motions are indecipherable, his legal analysis is poor, and he makes far too many speaking objections. But if he WERE a lawyer, Mason (as we call him) would definitely be a litigator. Maybe a prosecutor, maybe criminal defense... we aren't sure…. but it would have to be the type of law where charisma and assertiveness can make a difference to the outcome. Because Mason has tons of both.
The charisma is obvious. Those eyes. That stance. Mason has an intensity that beckons. And Mason also has a ton of charm. When he has been out on the floor with other cats, people will always stop and greet him. Mason could win over any jury.
The assertiveness is less obvious. You might spend days with him and never see it. Because, please understand, this is NOT a mean cat. Mason is surprisingly good with people and other cats. He adores being petted and leans in for more. But Mason survived outside by being the toughest cat in the area. When there wasn't enough food, Mason made sure he got his share first. When he couldn't avoid a fight, Mason made sure he won it. And while Mason is gradually learning that he is safe, he isn't quite convinced yet. Pet him and you can feel the coiled muscle. Grab for his food dish when he isn't expecting it or even walk by too fast, when he isn't sure what your intentions are, and he may strike out. Not to hurt you, but to make sure that you understand that nobody gets to hurt him. Not now. Not ever.
Mason has lived a life where the choices were win or lose, life or death. And he wasn’t going to lose. We expect that these issues will become less and less frequent as Mason learns that he is safe. He has already come so far in only a few weeks that a few of our volunteers don’t believe he was ever a tough guy. For now though, we are suggesting a quieter home with someone who has had some cat experience and no small children.
Someday (hopefully very soon) Mason is going to realize that he is retired from the practice of law, and he will spend his days sleeping in the sunshine on your rug, or padding silently through the house looking for company and snacks. He will understand that he has already won every case… every battle… that matters. Mason is not quite there yet. Maybe he just needs your help to get there.
