Marty - By Appointment Only - FeLV+ - Protectors of Animals

Approved adopters can schedule an appointment to meet our available cats. You do not need to choose a specific cat, but you do need to have an appointment.

Marty has Feline Leukemia and must be the only cat or with other cats who are FeLV+. Please read his bio carefully.

Every time he hears footsteps approaching his room, he runs to the door to greet us.

“Who’s a good boy?”

“Mehmehmeh”

“Is it Marty?”

“Mehmehmehmeh…”, he responds in his quiet voice, and rolls onto his side.

Yes, it’s Marty. We couldn’t ask for a sweeter, more well-behaved boy. He was shy with us at first, but it didn’t take long for him to show his warm playful side which earned him the nickname Marty Party. Our sweet young boy has so many good characteristics:

He always comes when we call him, and he is genuinely excited to see us.
He loves being petted.
He’s fun and quirky, and can make a toy out of anything. A strip of Velcro is irresistible. A small rug makes a great sled across a tile floor. And of course a real cat toy is always a toy.
He enjoys being brushed and doesn’t mind having his nails clipped during his Paw-dicures.
He loves loves loves belly rubs, even though we suspect that he’s a little ticklish.
He is a good eater -- not finicky at all.
He has very neat litter box habits.

Marty would be the perfect cat, but for one factor, and it’s an important one for any potential adopter to know. Marty tested positive for FeLV. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus belonging to the coronavirus subfamily, which means it is a cancer-causing virus. FeLV can cause severe anemia and suppress the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to a variety of opportunistic diseases. FeLV is not transmissible to humans.

FeLV cats generally have a shortened lifespan. A realistic expectation is 1-3 years. Cats with FeLV require routine vet care, a good diet, low stress, and lots of love. Please keep them indoors to protect them from picking up any infection from outdoors. Cats with FeLV are usually pretty healthy, until they aren’t.
