We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats.  You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters.
We have all heard the phrase, “curiosity killed the cat.” Well in the case of 2 ½ year old Koda this was almost literally true. You see, Koda is a cat that is filled with a sense of adventure and a disturbing lack of any sense of self-preservation.
On June 24, Koda managed to escape from his home to see what he could see in the great outdoors. It did not go well. Koda was found the next morning, severely injured, having been savagely attacked by an animal. He had multiple bite wounds, and it did not look like he would survive. His owner rushed him to the vet where she was told that the lifesaving surgery he needed would cost at least $6,000. Knowing that she could not afford to provide him with the care he needed, his owner surrendered Koda. A local rescuer who had set up a fund to care for homeless animals agreed to pay for his vet care (which ultimately cost about $9,000) and to make sure that Koda would be rehomed if he survived.
The surgery was extensive. The recovery was no doubt painful. But we are told that Koda was very brave and extremely sweet throughout the ordeal. He purred to express his thanks for the care and attention he received at the hospital and in his recovery foster home. This does not mean, however, that Koda was always well-behaved. Koda removed his bandages several times. When he was put in a onesie to keep him from scratching, Koda managed to get that off too – and to bury it in the litter box!
Koda’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous. In less than a month he was healed. His gait might be a little bit bit awkward at times but it doesn’t slow him down at all. Koda was ready for a forever home.
That is where we come in. When Koda was taken in, his rescuer reached out to Protectors of Animals to see if we could find him a home when he was ready. Although he was outside of our usual geographical area, how could we say no to a cat that had already beaten the odds by simply surviving? We couldn’t.
Koda has been with Protectors of Animals for about a week now. We can see how special he is. He is gorgeous. And friendly. In fact, Koda loves every person he has met. While we are just starting to assess him with other cats, we are told that he did very well with the female cats in his foster home.
Koda loves to play. He is cheerful and affectionate and a joy to have around. Koda is also very, very smart. And as we stated at the start of this post, Koda is very curious, adventurous, and lacks a sense of self preservation. He survived against all odds before, but he might not if he were to get outside again. So, Koda needs a home with people who are at least as smart as he is, and who will love him, play with him, and most of all protect him.
