“To be noticed without striving to be noticed, this is what elegance is about.”
~Luciano Barbera
Nine year old Herman is a cat with style. Whether he is prancing around the room on the tops of the condos (only ordinary cats use the floor) or napping on a favorite cat tree, Herman is elegance personified (catified?).
Things have not always been easy for Herman. He was born into a feral cat colony living in a warehouse. Trapped with his siblings, Herman was adopted as an older kitten and had many wonderful years. Unfortunately, his adopter fell on hard times and ultimately ended up in a situation that was unsafe for Herman. Wanting only to keep his cats safe, the adopter reached out to POA and we obviously agreed to take Herman and his brother* back.
Herman was very thin and did not look well when he returned. He had not seen a vet a while. He was barely six pounds. He was not eating. He was not grooming himself. (Please, no unkind comments. While we feel strongly that cats need to be taken to the vet regularly and especially if they appear ill, Herman’s adopter was struggling was trying their hardest.) We were honestly not sure that Herman was going to be okay.
Fast forward almost 6 weeks. Herman is on a special diet that he likes and works for him. He has gained almost a pound. He looks handsome and he knows it. He takes great pride in his appearance, grooming himself meticulously and accepting gentle brushing to help the still rough parts of coat begin to shine.
With people Herman is curious but reserved to begin with. He will watch and wait for you to approach him. Then he will happily accept your petting and ask for more. He likes to explore, but currently prefers a nap to rambunctious play. He loves catnip, which brings out his goofy side. The word used by volunteers to describe him is almost always “sweet”. It fits.
Herman has lived with cats in the past, but he is cautious with them at the shelter. We think he would be fine as a one and only and could probably live with another cat that is not too aggressive with him. But Herman would prefer a quieter home with gentle people and cats.
Herman is ready to put his past in the past and be the dapper darling he was meant to be. He is looking for someone who will brush him and praise him and take care of him. If you are looking for a gentleman companion who is ready to start enjoying the finer things in life, Herman is waiting.
