Mack

One of the absolutely best things when you are working in rescue is watching a cat find their mojo. When a cat who was completely shut down begins to trust again or becomes curious enough to venture out and explore…. Well, that is a win that can keep you buoyed up for weeks.

And that brings us to two-year-old Mack. Mack came to us with several other cats through animal control. He was one of a number of cats living in a motel room. Their person loved them very much and it shows. But several were extraordinarily shut down when they came into our care. Mack was one of the cats who struggled the most.

For weeks Mack sat at the back of his condo, refused to make eye contact, and sometimes hissed at us. He didn’t try to hurt us, but he did try to warn us away. He accepted petting sometimes. He even seemed to like it sometimes. But it wasn’t something he ever asked for.

In the last few weeks, however, Mack has blossomed. He has started leaving his condo to explore. He let us know that he loves a wand toy. He loves a squeeze up even more. He has played with other cats. He has found a cat tree and actually climbed it and made himself comfy on the top. He greets and interacts with his favorite volunteers.

Now we aren’t saying that Mack is going to be the life of the party. We suspect toddlers would absolutely terrify him. He is likely going to take some time to adjust to a new environment. But Mack has started to find his mojo. And we couldn’t be happier.
