We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats.  You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters.   Milo is FIV+.
Every cat that passes through the shelter has a story. Some stories are short and to the point. Some are poignant. And some are long, meandering and still unfinished. Five-year-old Milo's story falls into the last category. Once he had a home where he was likely happy but a change in family circumstances resulted in his ejection from the house. He was forced to live the unpredictable and often unsafe life of an outdoor cat and while he was outside, he was attacked and injured. Milo understandably has some lingering trust issues. The memories of his betrayal and his injury manifest in a fear of hands. Petting he is not ready for and any movement around his head triggers panic, which looks like aggression to those who don't understand Milo's story. He therefore needs an adopter who is willing to move slowly. Milo needs calm, gentle movements. He needs someone who can read his behavior like it is his spoken words.  He also needs time and patience to regain the trust he lost.
Milo is certainly not a starter cat but he has shown such potential in the time he's been with us. He's social with other cats and seems to crave a feline soulmate he can lean on. He likes to sit near people, as if he's charging his confidence from those who are willing to give him their time. And he's also started seeking affection by rubbing against legs and chattering for attention - a kind word or some encouragement from a friendly voice. Each day he's edging closer to a happier chapter. Milo's life hasn't been the fairest or the happiest but we want to show him that the past doesn't guarantee the present or the future. The right adopter - the one who will teach him to rewrite his tale - is out there. All they need is to hear Milo's story to know that they are needed and that they can make a difference in the life of a very deserving cat.
FIV+ - Despite what many people think, cats with this condition can live perfectly long, happy, healthy lives. The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a slow virus that affects a cat’s immune system over a period of years. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or other non-felines. FIV cats most often live long, healthy, and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be spread casually - like in litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling and playing. It is rarely spread from a mother to her kittens. FIV+  cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and free from stress, feed them a high-quality diet, and treat any secondary problems as soon as they arise.

Adoptions are now done by appointment only. Email [email protected] for more info and an appointment. Adopters must have an approved application before scheduling an appointment.
