Hi, My name is Nickel. I arrived at POA after being abandoned outside in a crate with no food or water for several days. I was sad, scared, and angry. I hissed and growled at volunteers who were simply trying to feed me or clean my condo. I shrank away from being touched and howled and swatted at the kind and brave volunteers who tried to pet me. I did not like other kitties or the commotion of the shelter. In short, I was miserable for several months. Until…
A wonderful foster mom took me to her home. There, I had my own room, free of cats, noise, or commotion. I was free to roam. Foster mom would sit and talk or sing to me, or read or watch tv. She gave me treats and told me she loved me. I wasn’t stressed anymore. Mom was patient and persistent. She understood me and didn’t try to push me past my comfort zone. So, I began to trust her. Soon, I realized I actually liked petting, and would seek it out. I even let mom brush me and I LOVED it and couldn’t get enough! Now I look forward to her coming upstairs after work for petting, snuggles, and treats. I even let mom’s sister pet and brush me this weekend!
I am still wary of strangers, even though I don’t hiss or growl at them anymore. I still don’t like cats, dogs, or loud noises. My dream home would be one like foster mom’s that is quiet, with one or two adults who are familiar with reticent cats and patient enough to earn my trust. Will you be that person?
