Oreo – Special Appointment Needed

Name:  Oreo

Age:     2  years

Breed: DSH

Sex:  Female

We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats.  You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters.
If you want to meet Oreo, you will need to request a special appointment to meet her in her foster home.  She is not comfortable in the shelter.  Oreo is available as a "Foster to Adopt".  Ask us for more information.

I crave solitude yet also crave people. I want to pour life and love into everything yet also nurture my self-care and go gently. I want to live within the rush of primal, intuitive decision, yet also wish to sit and contemplate. This is the messiness of life - that we all carry multitudes, so must sit with the shifts. We are complicated creatures, and ultimately, the balance comes from this understanding.”

                                             ~Victoria Erickson

Two year old Oreo is complicated. On the one hand, she is confident, outgoing, and endlessly entertaining. She is always up for playtime. She is curious and interested in people. At the same time, Oreo is afraid of sudden movements and unfamiliar sounds. And when startled, Oreo may assume that she is in danger and may lash out. Oreo likes to be petted, but can also be overstimulated and when she feels overwhelmed or startled, Oreo can grab at the petting hand that she loves.

With other cats, Oreo is the same. She likes the idea of a playmate and loves games of chase around the house. But Oreo is a true alpha and may be too much for other cats. So, for now, we are recommending her as a one and only or for someone who is willing to invest a lot of time in trying to very slowly introduce her to another cat.

(She has lived with another cat in a foster home.)

Oreo has been adopted and returned twice because of her unpredictable nature. And we absolutely understand that. She is not a cat for everyone. Oreo is complicated… messy… difficult… and most people are looking for easy. But we also know that Oreo wants connection. Once she trusts (which can take a while) she is all in. She is loyal, loving, and one heck of a lot of fun. She is absolutely worth the time it will take.

So no, Oreo isn’t the cat for everyone. But we only need one person, if it is the right person. We are looking for a person who understands why Oreo lashes out when she is afraid and pushes away what she most craves. We are looking for a person who understands what it is like to be a mix of yearning, bravado and fear. And just maybe we are looking for a person who knows what it is like to be a little bit complicated themselves.

If you are interested in giving her Oreo a chance, please reach out to our placement team.
