We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats. You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters.
Some people search for a new home that’s in move-in condition and requires little to no work from the new occupants. Others search based on potential. The space may not be perfect, but it has good bones and with some tender love and care, the home will be what was always dreamed of. Cat adoptions and home buying are not the same, but in some was they are analogous. Rafael, who is not quite a year old, falls into the fixer upper category. For some adopters, he’s going to require too much effort. But for the right adopter, the one who has the time and energy and who loves to shepherd a project from start to finish, Rafael is going to be a satisfying and rewarding addition to the family.
Rafael came to us from a hoarding situation, which means there were too many cats and not enough human attention to go around. He’s not yet certain about how to interact with people and feels much more confident around other self-assured cats. His trust in people is waiting to be won. In the short time he’s been with POA, we’ve seen his shell start to crack as he begins to accept and solicit petting from volunteers. His wariness can likely be worn down. Play is the obvious way to his heart – he still has a lot of kitten in him and he loves to be busy. A person who helps satisfy his playful instincts will quickly become an ally and a treasured resource in his life. Which is not to say that Rafael’s path will be easy, only that it’s possible through patience and love.
Rafael’s ideal forever home will have other cats who are not pushovers as Rafael likes cats but sometimes gets a little too bossy with those who don’t hold their ground. And it will have a person who sees the potential and knows that hard work and time are investments worth making.
