We are scheduling appointments for adopters to come in and meet our available cats.  You do not need to choose a specific cat and we are not placing cats on hold for specific adopters.  Sam is in a foster home.  Please let us know if you would like to meet him so we can arrange to have him come into the shelter.  Sam will be available to meet adopters after 1/25/26.
When three-year-old Sam came to Protectors of Animals he was not in the best shape. He had been found abandoned outside by a good Samaritan, who noticed that he seemed to be struggling and was very thin. When he arrived, Sam was sweet and gentle with us, but all he wanted to do was sleep. We see that a lot. Cats who’ve been struggling often spend their first few weeks catching up on the sleep they were afraid to take outside.
We also found out why he was so thin. As one of our amazing vet partners put it, “his mouth was a disaster”. He had teeth that were close to falling out and eating had to have been painful. Well, any POA cat who needs a dental gets a dental. We are not sending cats home in pain. So Sam got his dental. He was also treated for an ear infection. And he started feeling sooooo much better!
Sam has put on weight. He has started exploring and even playing. He is impatient to be out of his condo for time out on the floor. No longer content with just a safe space, Sam now wants his own space. He wants to go home.
What would Sam’s dream home look like? Well, Sam doesn’t care much about the finishes. He doesn’t care if the floors are Brazilian hardwood or linoleum. The counters can be granite or quartz or or laminate as far as he’s concerned. (Sam knows you aren’t goning to let him on the counter anyway.) He can be just as happy in an apartment as a mansion. But Sam does have a few non-negotiables.
First and most importantly, he wants to be the only cat. While there have been a few cats that he has shared space with at the shelter, most irritate him. We think because of his time outside, in pain, and trying to protect himself, having cats around keeps Sam on high alert and makes him uncomfortable. He is a different (and much happier) cat without other cats around.
Second, he wants a window that he can look out from the safety of his own home. He wants to watch the squirrels and birds and rain and snow, knowing that he will always be warm and dry, and that his dinner will be served in his own special bowl, not something he needs to catch. At the shelter, we have noticed that he sometimes likes to go up to one of the higher spots and keep an eye on things, so a cat tree near a window would be icing on the cake.
Third, he wants someone to love him (as don’t we all). Sam likes people. He likes to be petted. He likes to lean against you and put one paw out and gently tap you. We bet he would like to meet you at the door and pad around quietly after you while you make dinner. We suspect that he would like to sleep at the foot of your bed. He’s a medium to low energy cat who wants someone to play with him a little and love him a lot.
If you think that you might be able to love Sam a lot, please fill out the application on our website. Our placement team will be in touch to tell you about our adoption process, answer any questions, and make you an appointment to meet all the available cats and kittens. And if you aren’t looking to adopt right now or if Sam is not a match for you, you can still lend him a paw by letting people know about him.

Adoptions are now done by appointment only. Email [email protected] for more info and an appointment. Adopters must have an approved application before scheduling an appointment.
