Meet Kirby!

Are you looking for a new fur family member? One that can check all the boxes (walking partner, car ride copilot, and affectionate foot warmer)? Stop, and look no further than Kirby! He is an outgoing, friendly 8 year old mixed breed pup. We have had to guess his mix, but our best guess after getting to know him is "Borador" (a fancy name for a Labrador Retriever/Border Collie mix - look it up and you will find so many of his doppelgangers!). There may be some German Shepherd and/or Terrier in there for good measure, but whatever his mix, he is an incredible sweetheart of a mutt. He has become a volunteer favorite at Protectors of Animals, however, after almost 1 year at our shelter, we are all still shocked that he has had no adoptive interest - but it is no secret that black, senior dogs are always overlooked in shelters. It's time for Kirby to find the furever home that he deserves!

Kirby came to us quite overweight, however, with a good diet and exercise plan he has shed 20lbs from his 90lb, big boy frame. At 70lbs, Kirby seems "reborn" now that he is so much lighter on his feet - he is a silly, goofy boy that loves to run around, kicking up his heels chasing tennis balls (and jumping up for love). Kirby adores the snow and being out and about on adventures even on cold days. He REALLY enjoys his daily 1 mile walks and car rides, but also enjoys relaxing, stretching out, and taking a luxurious nap (the best blend of active and calm you could ask for!). Kirby LOVES people and getting pets, praise, and attention - his favorite things in the world are butt scritches and scratches, and his favorite treats are green beans! Kirby will do best in an adult home or one with older teenagers. He would not mind sharing his home with cats! He is 100% housebroken and solidly knows many basic commands as well. Kirby would be very content as the only dog in the home or may consider sharing his home with a smaller dog (he seems to enjoy the company of the other small dogs on the daily group walks at our shelter!). For more information about how to make Kirby your next 4-legged family member, please contact Tracey at tracey.d@poainc.org.

"Bless my soul
I've been alone too long
Somebody without someone
Is no one at all.

'Cause I've heard that heaven ain't easy to get to, ooh
The closest I'll get might be right next to you, ooh
For I've got to know
I got to feel how it feels
To be loved by you
Ooh, I got to touch something real
Can I feel and be loved by you."
